What Is Character Congruence?

Character Congruence is the version of you that you broadcast holding up when someone meets you on a regular Tuesday afternoon. The term comes from Henna Pryor’s The Signal Gap (Ideapress, November 2026), where it closes the signal gap between your broadcast self and your behavioral self.
What promises are you making without noticing?
You have a public persona whether you curated one or not. Your broadcast self is everything you put into shared space - the reply-alls, the comments on other people’s posts, the Slack messages, the bio you haven’t touched in years. Every post and comment is a small claim about who you are, and they accumulate into a standard people hold you to, whether you meant to set it or not.
Why do small character gaps cost so much?
Because failing to deliver on the exact promise you make and broadcast carries an outsized price - a small character gap can cost a total loss of trust. The audience isn’t comparing you to perfection. It’s comparing you to your own stated standard, and the closer the miss is to your headline promise, the more it costs.
How do you close a character gap?
A claim can’t close it - only behavior can, and it has to cost you something. Define your non-negotiables as values plus the behavior attached, because a value without a behavior is just a preference. And build a detection system that catches your own drift early: you don’t get to be the last person to find out about your character gap, because whoever names it first owns the version everyone believes.

What’s the difference between a lagger and a performer?

Is having a curated online presence dishonest?
Not inherently - curation becomes a character gap only when the curated version outruns the lived one. The book’s rule of thumb: never curate faster than you can live.
